121-point cross-type phase-detection AF
An advanced autofocus system combines 121 phase-detection AF points and 121 contrast-detection AF points for fast and precise focusing performance. All 121 phase detection points are cross-type for greater accuracy in mixed lighting conditions, providing improved subject tracking capabilities. Several focus modes are available to suit work in various shooting conditions, including 25-point Group Target mode for moving subjects such as birds and wildlife. Face Detection and Eye Detection AF have also been updated, and the camera features a newly designed Starry Sky AF mode, as well as individual AF area settings for vertical and horizontal positions.

Myriad specialized elements are incorporated into the optical design, which help to suppress spherical aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to produce sharp, color-accurate imagery. A ZERO coating is also featured, which controls flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions.
