Macro optics on the market tend to have a long focal length (from 60mm to 120mm) and the subject occupies most of the frame, isolated from the surrounding environment.
Laowa 24mm, on the other hand, allows you to focus very closely (2cm @ 2: 1), while showing many details and textures. At the same time, it is possible to enjoy a wide-angle view (84.1 °) so more details of the environment can be included in the shot. It is thus possible to create more information-rich images with perspectives that no other lens can achieve.
The ability to focus so closely allows for tons of shooting possibilities.

With Laowa Probe it is possible to reach the maximum magnification of 2: 1 allowing you to portray really small insects and reveal details not visible to the naked eye. It is particularly useful for videographers because both the smallest details and the environment can be captured in one shot.

This wide-angle design also means greater depth of field at close range (compared to telephoto macro lenses). This is a great advantage for both stusio (table top) and nature shots.

Depth of field comparison

The particular design of Laowa 24mm, with the barrel long 40cm, allows you to bring the lens very close to the subject while remaining distant. Imagine how convenient it is to shoot a frog in the pond being able to hide behind a bush, instead of having to get closer to get closer to the subject or study covered by the bush in which it is hiding.
Furthermore the small diameter allowed to enter small spaces otherwise inaccessible.

Another example is the shooting of dangerous snakes. The length of the barrel allows us to stay at a safe distance, and the dimensions of the lens do not alarm the subject.

In a video perspective, the tubular lens allows you to shoot shots in very small areas, for example between the canlines on a cake or the neck of a bottle.
Getting the subject right is not always easy in macro photography. The usual macro lenses have large barrels (60mm or more in diameter) that block much of the light on the subject.

Laowa Probe is only 20mm in diameter which leaves enough illumination on the subject.

Laowa 24mm also features an LED annular illuminator on the front of the lens, for support in focusing.

Waterproof: to make the lens even more versatile, the front part of the barrel is waterproof, to allow shooting under the surface of the water.
This protection is also a shield against dust and fine sand. (the waterproof cover is not removable).

Laowa 24mm f / 14 has a coverage circle compatible with 35mm Full Frame and Super35mm sensors.

Despite its unique appearance and many features, Laowa 24mmf / 14 is super light and easy to carry: it weighs only 474g.
