Long range, compact design
Distinct from super telephoto lenses, this 400mm f / 4.5 is particularly sleek and lightweight, making it an ideal companion for travel or other shooting scenarios where handheld shooting is preferred.
Sophisticated optical design includes a number of specialized elements that promote a lighter and more compact overall design.
Modest f / 4.5 maximum aperture offers a practical balance of size, speed and weight.
-With a size more like a 70-200mm f / 2.8, this lens measures just 9.2 "in length and weighs 2.7 lbs. Compared to the Z 400mm f / 2.8 lens, this version f / 4.5 weighs 3.8 pounds less and measures 6 "less in length.

S Line Optic
Helping to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations, color fringes and comic aberrations, this lens features an ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element and two Super ED elements, along with an SR (refractive at length d 'short wave).
SR element features a specialized high dispersion design that refracts wavelengths shorter than blue; this helps to achieve truly accurate color rendition and also helps to make the lens design more compact.
-Nano Crystal Coat has been applied for all-round anti-glare protection at all angles, helping to suppress ghosting, reflections and glare for higher contrast and more accurate color response when working in strong light conditions and backlight.


Auto focus and vibration reduction
-The advanced autofocus system uses stepper motors to deliver fast and accurate focusing performance, along with smooth, quiet AF that is well suited to both stills and video applications.
Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focus design is used, in which only the internal lens groups are shifted during focusing, to maintain the overall lens length during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
-Vibration Reduction Image Stabilization reduces the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to allow for better handheld shooting in low light situations.
-Synchro VR is also supported when paired with compatible cameras featuring sensor-shift VR, which combines internal virtual reality with optical virtual reality for better results with up to 6 stops of compensation.
Professional handling and construction
As part of the lightweight and agile design, the included tripod foot can be easily removed for a slimmer design, ideal for manual use.
Physical design focuses the center of gravity towards the rear of the lens, around the tripod mount, for a smoother and more responsive pan when shooting handheld or working on a tripod or monopod. The tripod mount also rotates for easier switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientation.
-The intuitive "no-look" control layout puts all frequently used buttons and knobs in easy-to-reach positions to avoid the need to move your eye away from the viewfinder.
-Non-slip rubber front handle for stable portable use.
-Separate manual focus ring and programmable control ring offer distinct levels of tactile control over shooting settings.
-Compatible with the optional TC-1.4x and TC-2x Z teleconverter to further extend the reach of this lens.
